Unlike the experiences some of you had with the techs at Dell, I found them to be very knowledgeable, very caring and very responsive. Though it took nearly three hours and remote connection, the techs were able to solve the problem by having me make some changes to my BIOS, then physically disconnecting the printer from the PC and doing the uninstall/download again. So I spoke to Dell - one technician in Canada and one in India (I am in the US).

I uninstalled the driver, downloaded the update driver and rebooted - all to no avail. The printer would not communicate with the PC after the upgrade, though the device manager reported that it was working properly.

I received the upgrade CD's a few weeks ago. My Dell XPS was packaged with XP when it was delivered in December, and came with a free upgrade to Vista Home Premium. I appreciate the advice I gained by reading your plights with the Dell 966 and Vista, as I'd had the same situation. Either way I've had no problems with my HP to date, and although Dell makes beautiful PCs by color and design, if functionability is so poor, I'll continue to buy HP. I own an HP and have had no such problems, consider however that I own an outdated printer from my grandmother that bubble jets in Black and white, but even with cave drawings on it, my printers file still found it and executed just fine. I've been looking at similr printers, I think I'll get an HP 6310 or similar when my purchase time comes. at least, since he deactivated those components the PC WILL BOOT with the printer plugged in, only now I have no idea what I'll find isn't working due to deactivation and the warning "Blocked Startup Programs" remains on the lower right of my screen. Since "Startup Programs" are an operational program I am leery to try to fix that issue myself, being only an experienced user. In the meantime he deactived certain startup functions and I still haven't had them reactivated yet. Finally he said they tried everything and that it had to be a Printer problem and I'm waiting for the "Printer department" to call me back to go another round with them. I sat on the line with a Dell tech for nearly 2 hours as he tried everything he knew to get it to work. Even still it's not recognized by the PC and when we try to reinstall it, the PC does not identify the component (Dell Photo AIO Printer 966). You are forced to turn off the PC, unplug the printer from the PC and then reboot, and it starts up fine. In fact it siezes in boot and won't respond to the F2, F12, Esc, or even Ctrl+Alt+Del commands. If the Printer is plugged in at boot, the PC would not boot up completely. The REAL PROBLEM is in the PC recognizing the Printer. When it did work I was able to calibrate and print test pages and everything from the printer itself was satisfactory.
